Headstones & Monuments at St. James Church of Ireland (Old Cemetery).

This cemetery, which is located in the grounds of St. James’ Church of Ireland in Athboy, is now very seldom used for burials. It is a very old cemetery and, along with the cemeteries at Hill of Ward, Rathmore and Moyagher, has served the population of Athboy for many hundreds of years. The oldest monument which I found dates from 1698.

A selected number of headstone inscriptions were recorded in 1907 by The Association for the Preservation of the Memorials of the Dead. Their results were published in their annual journal which is available in Meath County Library in Navan. The graveyard was again fully surveyed in the 1970s by well known local historian, the late Dr. Beryl F. E. Moore. Her results were published in The Irish Ancestor, Vol XIII No 2, 1981, which is also available in Navan Library, Local History Department.

The transcription which I publish below was compiled by cross-referencing the above two works and updating the inscriptions , from my own survey, as necessary. Many gravestone markers have not withstood the ravages of time. Some have been damaged and broken. Many iron and wooden crosses which I remember from years ago have simply rotted away. Doubtless, many other graves were simply unmarked. This is a complete list of all surviving monuments and headstones, as of June 2016.

RECORDED MONUMENTS WHICH ARE DESTROYED OR NO LONGER VISIBLE

HENRY. (In 1907 The Association for the Preservation of the Memorials of the Dead recorded that there was a “flat slab, much sunk in the ground, in the south side of the graveyard”. This monument is no longer visible, neither was it recorded by Dr Beryl F E Moore in the 1970s. It may well still be in situ but is most likely completely covered over. This inscription is from the 1907 recording of the cemetery). Here lieth the body of Mr Patrick Henry who departed this life the 5th day of January 1716

SMITH. The Journal of the Association for the Preservation of the Memorials of the Dead , Vol 2, 1892, records 2 monuments which have not survived. These records come from the notes of Isaac Butler and are dated 1740. NOTE : The present church dates from 1770 so it seems likely that this and the following monument were destroyed in the rebuilding.

“In the south wall of the church over a large tomb, a stone with the inscription ; “Here lyeth the bodie of Elizabeth Smith, the daughter of Robert Collier, Parson of St Colliers Church in Chester and wife of William Smith Vicar of Athboy to whom she bore six sonnes, whereof three were here interred before her. She died December 13, 1631”, “

GOLLDEN/GOLDING and PLUNKET and HUTCHESTON. This monument, like the previous one, has not survived the rebuilding of the church in 1770. The Journal of the Association for the Preservation of the Memorials of the Dead, Vol 2, 1892, published this inscription :-

“In the chancel there is a large stone with the following inscription on the edges of it, and two coats of arms in the middle :-

4 Replies to “Headstones & Monuments at St. James Church of Ireland (Old Cemetery).”

  1. I was wondering if you might help me. My great grandparents, Patrick Burns/Byrnes of Athboy and Anne Corrigan of Ballivor were married in Brooklyn, New York in 1910. Patrick’s parents were John Burns/Byrnes and Mary Farrell (maiden name). Anne’s were John Corrigan and Jane McGuire/Maguire. Patrick would have been born around 1880 in Athboy though the only church records that come close are from 1878 to match names and location. Anne was born around the same time in Ballivor. There are records indicating her father might have been buried in Trim, but so far any record hunting I have done has been fruitless.

My husband and I are traveling to Ireland for the first time in less than a week and are staying in Athboy May 13. While we’ve done some hunting for more historical records before, it has now reached a fever pitch as I comb through trying to find out more about where they lived, exactly, and where my family might be buried or at least what parishes they might have been baptized in. (We are Catholic.)

Any help you might be able to provide would be welcome, especially for the Byrnes/Burns branch in Athboy. Many thanks!
