It is believed that the first bridge was built here in the 1400s, creating the present line of the town’s street. The present bridge was built in 1866 as part of a three year project to drain the Athboy river from its junction with the Boyne at Kilnagross to its source at Drewstown.

The river was diverted to accommodate the operation of the water wheel for the nearby corn mill, with water levels being controlled by a weir and sluice gate which have long been demolished.
