This small stone wall enclosure was used for holding “impounded” animals – usually strays – until fines were paid for allowing them to wander on the public road. It was also extensively used for “dipping” sheep in the river. The original pound of Athboy was actually located on the opposite side of the lane (as is evidenced by several older maps) and was moved here in the 1840s, clearing the site opposite in early preparation for the coming of the railway station.
It is also believed that, many years ago, this area was used for the execution of criminals.
